National Geographic Video on the mechanics of meth addiction

As the video above says, meth amphetamine can seriously disrupt the body’s dopamine receptors.  Dopamine is one of the chemicals in the body that regulates feeling good.  Meth amphetamine overloads the dopamine circuits, causing the brain to react just like a fuse in your fuse box by shutting down the natural production of dopamine.    Eventually, the addict can feel nothing because the pleasure center of the brain is completely shut down.  They still crave the drug, but there is no relief.

If you suspect your kids are experimenting with drugs, make sure you talk to them about the dangers of meth amphetamine addiction.  There are home drug testing kits that screen for meth usage.  However, meth amphetamine is so addictive that as little as one hit can be enough to create an addict.  If the drug test comes back positive, you must realize that this is just the first step in a long process of recovery.

Your kids may be talking about drugs and you won’t even have a clue.  The drug culture uses many slang or street names to describe the drugs and paraphernalia associated with drug abuse.

Our supplier has put together a database of drug slang to help you recognize the warning signs.

To search for a drug type by slang term or street names, CLICK HERE.

Many parents have to face the reality that their child will or has used drugs so it is important to know how to recognize drug terms or lingo.

We have comprised an extensive list of over thousands of slang terms for the many drug types available today and the list is continuously growing.

We will be updating this slang term database regularly as new slang terms and lingo are been created everyday.

  • Drug lingo (e.g. pot)

  • Drug slang terms (e.g. 420)

  • Drug Paraphernalia (e.g. pipe)

  • Street names for drugs (e.g. weed)

Note: We have included misspellings in our database.

You should be aware that some terms which you once considered innocent (e.g. jelly – which refers to cocaine)

Simply enter a term (e.g. speed) into the search box and the results with show the drug type(s) associated with that slang term.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT 420 MEANS?

Have you ever heard your teenager reference the time “4:20?” Many parents don’t realize that 420 (pronounced “four-twenty”) is a “secret code” for a time to get high. The reference to 420 presumably dates back to ’70s stoner lingo but is still widely recognized by the youth of today. Some people have even designated April 20th as “National Pot Smokers Day.”

If you hear your teenager reference 420, see that he/she is using the term while instant messaging with friends or has a 420 sticker on his car or backpack, call him on it. Let him know you know what he’s talking about.

Which 5 panel drug test for at home drug tests is the best value for your money?

Let’s take a look at two types of  home drug testing kits available from Test Country with 5 panels or more.  A panel is simple a single test for a specific drug test.  For example, a one panel drug test might only test for cocaine.  A two panel home drug testing kit might test for cocaine and ecstasy.

You can click on any of the links at any time to purchase.

Hair Confirm

This is actually a 7 panel drug test that can screen for marijuana, methamphetamine, amphetamine,  ecstasy, cocaine, opiates such as heroin and phencyclidine.  Hair sample drug tests are the gold standard of drug testing because they can reveal drug use over time.  Other methods can only track more recent drug use.  However, hair drug test samples must be sent to an outside lab, unlike other types of at home drug testing that can give you instant results in the privacy of your own home.

The price is around $60-80, depending on the number of repeat tests you would like to have.

Unlike hair sample drug tests, urinalysis drug testing or saliva drug tests are available in a 5 panel drug test format at a much cheaper price.  These at home drug tests start at $6.  But apart from the price and the fact that these are instant drug tests, both saliva drug tests and urinalysis drug testing have one major drawback – they require the cooperation of the test subject.  This is fine if you are testing yourself, or if you are an employer with a mandatory drug testing policy.  But if you are a parent who is worried their child is taking drugs, this may be a problem.

You might be wondering why on earth your loved seems to be choosing drugs over family. You might be struggling with finances, or even from the painful realization your loved one is in trouble with the law. Or you might be asking yourself why you are taking drugs again, when you swore just a few hours ago that you needed to cut down.

Without help, drug abuse destroys families and takes lives. But there is hope. Find out how to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug abuse or addiction in someone you care about or yourself. With the right support and treatment, the road to recovery is possible.

Drug users may know the medical risks but they tend to ignore the legal risks involved. Teenagers especially do not have a fully developed brain that can evaluate the dangers of drug abuse. That’s where home drug tests can be used to protect our children from these risks.

via DoseNation on 11/26/09

Meanwhile, in the “tell me something I don’t know” department:

Drug users are well informed about the harms associated with the drugs they use, and perceive alcohol and tobacco to be amongst the most dangerous substances, according to a survey by UCL (University College London) and Imperial College London researchers. The findings, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, suggest that the current system of classifying psychoactive drugs in the UK may need to be revisited….

Drug users were asked to rate twenty psychoactive substances on a ‘rational’ scale previously developed by Professor David Nutt, Imperial College London, who collaborated on this study. Heroin, crack and cocaine topped the list in terms of harm, but alcohol was rated fifth, solvents seventh and tobacco ninth. Ecstasy came 13th in the harm rating, LSD 16th and cannabis 18th. Thus, the survey found no relationship between the drug’s legal status, based on the current classification system, and users’ ratings of harm….

Dr Celia Morgan, UCL Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, says: “Given that the Misuse of Drugs Act aims to signal to young people the harmfulness of drugs, this suggests a flaw with the current classification of drugs. We found that drug users rated legal substances such as alcohol and tobacco as more harmful than Class A substances like LSD and ecstasy. We found a high correlation between harm ratings by users and those made previously by scientific experts across all substances, suggesting users are well informed about the harms of drugs.”

Those pesky well-informed drug users, blowing the curve for everybody else…

Instant drug tests can catch some of the drugs in spiked drinks, but alcohol is still one of the most powerful and socially sanctioned drugs in the developed world.

via DoseNation on 11/28/09

British researchers have found that 3 out of 4 young women surveyed felt that drink spiking is an important risk and more than half say they know someone whose drink has been spiked. Yet an Australian study found that out of 97 ER patients complaining of a spiked drink, not one showed a positive toxicology screen and only 9 were rated as “plausible claims.”

The British group suggests that the myth persists because it allows friends and family of young women to discuss the dangers of intoxication and make plans to keep each other safe without appearing judgmental about heavy drinking.

Dr Adam Burgess from the university’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, said: “Young women appear to be displacing their anxieties about the consequences of consuming what is in the bottle on to rumours of what could be put there by someone else.

“The reason why fear of drink-spiking has become widespread seems to be a mix of it being more convenient to guard against than the effects of alcohol itself and the fact that such stories are exotic – like a more adult version of ’stranger danger’.”
